Boy, 4, woman killed in crash -- drivers flee
A 4-year-old Elgin boy and a 57-year-old woman from Mexico were killed in a rollover crash Friday night in which the drivers of both vehicles fled the scene.
Just before 9 p.m., a white van cut off a car on Interstate 90 near Illinois 31 near northwest suburban Dundee. The car swerved to avoid a crash but hit a Ford Expedition, causing it to roll over, State Police said.
Several of the SUV's seven occupants -- including the boy, Louis Crabales, and the woman, Maria Guadarrama -- were thrown from the vehicle. Before police arrived, the driver of the white van drove off, police said. Police said the driver of the SUV and a passenger ran from the scene. Police Supt. Weis admits murders up from last year
Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis said Saturday that a recent spike in violence had led to an increase in the number of murders since last year.

A cable fire near some Loop elevated tracks late Saturday forced the CTA to shut down all elevated train service in the Loop for almost seven hours.
Shuttle buses were provided for CTA customers between the Cermak-Chinatown station and the Merchandise Mart, CTA spokeswoman Noelle Gaffney said.
Gaffney said there was a fire to cable which provided power to the trains, near the elevated tracks at Wabash Avenue, just south of Van Buren Street, late Saturday. This affected service on the Red, Green, Orange and Brown Lines and no trains operated on the Loop elevated until damage was assessed and repairs were made. The Red Line was affected because the line was running on the elevated tracks because of subway construction this weekend.
A tip that a Lake Forest investment broker might have ties to a militia group led to a Thursday morning raid on his sprawling home, netting dozens of guns -- including three .50-caliber weapons known for their massive firepower, authorities said.
Benjamin A. Stevens, 49, of 1991 Telegraph Road, is charged with illegal gun possession. His state firearm owner identification card was revoked after a 2002 domestic battery arrest, officials said.
State Police and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives recovered about 85 rifles and handguns, including a .50-caliber sniper rifle, two .50-caliber guns with tripods, an Uzi, a .30-caliber rifle and about 50,000 rounds of ammunition, authorities said. ATF, which is assisting the State Police, will test the .50-caliber weapons to see if they're fully automatic and if the ammo was armor-piercing -- federal violations.
Chicago Police are investigating an alleged sexual assault at a South Side elementary school this week.
Police didn't elaborate on the investigation Thursday, a day after the alleged attack was reported. But officials at the Chicago International Charter School's Basil campus, 1816 W. Garfield, confirmed that two elementary students may have assaulted another student.
Beth Purvis, executive director of Chicago International Charter School, said: "All three are juveniles, the matter was quickly referred to Chicago Police, and they're investigating. In light of that and the need to protect the identities of our underage students, we can't share additional details at this time, other than to say that we're working with parents and, as always, doing everything necessary to protect the safety of our students."
